The Approach

Every session serves one purpose: building a team that dominates the ball and hunts it when they lose it. Here's the phased approach.

Foundation (Wk 1-4) Embed (Wk 5-8) Refine (Wk 9-12)
Weeks 1-4

Foundation

Establish the non-negotiables. Build-up play from GK, pressing triggers, body shape, and fitness base. Players learn what we do and why.

  • Build-up play from GK through CBs and DMs
  • Pressing shape — when #9 goes, everyone goes
  • Body shape and receiving principles
  • Fitness baseline — sprint counts, high-intensity work
  • Introduction to 4-2-3-1 roles and responsibilities
Weeks 5-8

Embed

Move from understanding to execution under pressure. 11v11 phase play, transition speed, and opponent-specific pressing shapes.

  • Full 11v11 build-up and pressing scenarios
  • Transition speed — attacking and defensive
  • Gegenpressing — the 6-second rule
  • Set piece introduction and rehearsal
  • Game state management — winning by 1, chasing
Weeks 9-12

Refine

Fine-tune under match conditions. Decision-making speed, alternative formations, and mental toughness in high-pressure scenarios.

  • Decision speed under fatigue
  • Alternative shapes — 3-2-5, 4-3-3 in possession
  • Press adaptation vs different formations
  • Match simulation with coached interventions
  • Review, video analysis, individual development

Session Structure (every session): Warm-Up & Activation (15 min) — Technical/Tactical Block 1 (25 min) — Block 2 (25 min) — Game-Related Practice (20 min) — Cool Down & Debrief (5 min). Every session finishes with a game. Every game has conditions that reinforce the session's theme.

Core Drills Library

These drills recur throughout the 12 weeks with progressive overloads. Master these and the system runs itself.

Build-Up Play

7v2 → 7v4 → 7v6 Overload

GK + 2 CBs + 2 FBs + 2 DMs build out against increasing opposition. Start with 2 pressers, add 2 every few weeks. The gold standard drill for build-up confidence.

  • Week 1-2: 7v2 — focus on positioning, angles, body shape
  • Week 3-4: 7v4 — now the press has structure, must find solutions
  • Week 5-8: 7v6 — realistic press, build-up must be quick and brave
  • Week 9-12: 7v7 — match intensity, add transition on turnover
Pressing

Shadow Press → Live Press

Start with unopposed shadow pressing — 11 players press an imaginary build-up. Then progress to live pressing against a back line with increasing realism.

  • Week 1-2: Shadow press — coach calls the ball position, players react
  • Week 3-4: 6v4 pressing — front 6 press against 4 defenders
  • Week 5-8: 11v11 pressing — full shape, live triggers
  • Week 9-12: Press vs different formations (back 3, back 5)
Possession

Positional Rondos

4v2 → 5v3 → 8v4 rondos in positional grids. Players must stay in their positional zones. The ball must travel through the grid, not around it.

  • Every session: 4v2 in warm-up (15 mins)
  • Week 3+: 5v3 with target player (break lines)
  • Week 7+: 8v4 positional play in half-pitch setup
Transitions

5v5+2 Transition Game

5v5 in a tight area with 2 neutral players. On turnover, the team that lost it must win it back within 6 seconds or concede a point. Pure gegenpressing training.

  • Week 1-4: 4v4+2, generous area (30x30)
  • Week 5-8: 5v5+2, smaller area (25x25)
  • Week 9-12: 6v6+2, match-speed with directional goals
Final Third

Crossing & Finishing Circuits

FB overlaps, winger cuts inside, #10 arrives late. Rehearsed patterns that end with a shot. Quality over quantity — every rep must be match speed.

  • Week 3+: Unopposed patterns — overlap, underlap, cutback
  • Week 5+: Semi-opposed with passive defenders
  • Week 9+: Fully opposed with GK and back line
Set Pieces

Corner & Free Kick Rehearsal

3 corner routines (near post, far post, short). 2 direct free kick routines. Rehearsed weekly from Week 5. Assigned personnel and movements.

  • Week 5-6: Introduce routines, walk through, then half-speed
  • Week 7-8: Full speed with opposition
  • Week 9-12: Match rehearsal — corners in the conditioned game
